Crysis 2 Multiplayer: Hands on

I got the chance to put my paws on an alpha build of Crysis 2’s multiplayer (Xbox 360). Normally when messing with an Alpha build you’re seeing some pretty rough stuff. Jaggy graphics, glitchy gameplay. Apparently the folks at Crysis 2 skipped that part, because the game I got to play was running smooth and looking pretty.I’ve described Crysis 2 multiplayer to a couple of people as being Quake meets Modern Warfare. Your guy can make impossible jumps, scramble up and over walls, go invisible, powerslide into melee attacks and a whole lot more. But visually this game goes right up there with MW2. It also shares an extremely intuitive control scheme with that franchise. I had only to be told how to cloak and put on extra armor and I had it down.

You can choose from 5 classes including sniper, assault, engineer, scout and another than escapes me currently. In the game I was playing it was very much like a capture the control point match, though it eventually just became an all out kill fest. The pace is frantic. Campers beware, there really aren’t too many places to hide, even cloaked, because at any time enemy can swap over to heat vision, where you’ll stand out like a sore thumb.

While single player will certainly be where this game hangs its hat, I think they’ve really got something interesting and full of potential in Crysis 2. The real factor in whether it succeeds against other mp peers will be in the diversity of those 12 maps it ships with, and the addictiveness of the 5 other game modes. The foundation is there though. It looks good and its fun to play.

In the interest of fairness and transparency I did play the game surrounded by free booze and good friends, which DID put me in a pretty good mood.
Ghost Recon Future Soldier: A Glimpse into the Future of Advanced Warfare
With the 10th anniversary of Ghost Recon coming up, Ubisoft is looking to take its franchise to the next level, but how can it compete in an already overcrowded market of first player shooters? How about teaming up with military contacts that are actively developing technology that may define the future of advanced warfare? Yes, Ghost Recon Future Soldier is not all science fiction folks, it’s a conceivable reality of what spec-ops warfare could look like 10-15 years from now.

Call of Duty Black Opps

In a recent interview with UK gaming mag PC Zone, Treyarch head Mark Lamia announced that Call of Duty: Black Ops -- unlike the last Call of Duty game on PC -- will feature dedicated servers for PC players. "I think dedicated servers are excellent. I don't see any reason not to see them unless ... well, I just don't see any reason not to," Lamia responded when asked about Black Ops' PC iteration, reports CVG. Covering his bases (and likely not trying to insult Infinity Ward's reasoning behind not supporting dedicated servers), Lamia added, "We do work very hard to reconcile the desire to manipulate and modify those dedicated servers with offering them the persistent experience and benefits that the console system provides ... so people can run dedicated servers and also participate in the communal experience the console players get to have, given they're all on first-party servers." And with that, it would seem that Treyarch will give us a chance to officially leap through the air while raining an unlimited supply of explosives on the ground below us when the game arrives this November. Hooray? Activision and Treyarch have released the first full-length trailer for the upcoming Call of Duty: Black Ops. You may remember the initial teaser from a couple weeks back, but this one -- clocking in at a more satisfying 1 minute 42 seconds -- is, as promised by Treyarch community manager Josh Olin last week, "brand-new, 100% gameplay." Watch it in full after the break. Call of Duty: Black Ops is set for a November 9, 2010 release. We'll be on-hand for what we can only imagine will be its very flashy playable debut at next month's E3. <marquee direction="right" scrolldelay="60" scrollamount="2">View HD trailer here at Team Stealth Media</marquee>
